Apple’s generative AI offering may not work with the standard iPhone 15

Apple is set to unleash its generative AI engine at next week’s World Wide Developer Conference. Reports so far point to a partnership with OpenAI that will help supercharge Siri, among other things.

A new round of rumors reported by Bloomberg shed more light on the news that will be revealed at Monday’s 10 a.m. PT keynote. First up is the name: Apple Intelligence. The company was apparently invested in retaining the AI ​​initials for its own shock at the large language model (LLM) pinata.

The name seems to apply to broader advancements in this category that could include OpenAI partnerships and resulting chatbots. Apple Intelligence will come as an opt-in beta, similar to the developer-focused operating system updates that the company releases after WWDC. The system should ship on upcoming versions of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

According to the report, a limited number of older devices will also be able to run the system, including iPads and Macs with an M1 chip or higher, and the iPhone 15 Pro. This means the standard iPhone 15 may be left out.

Apple Intelligence will initially focus on strengthening existing applications. This includes things like page summaries and notification summaries in Safari. As previously reported, Siri is set to get a new dimension in 2024, with the ability to access more things like photo editing with voice. It seems Apple’s big push into AI is less about flash and more about making its operating system more intuitive and user-friendly.

Despite the reported hardware limitations, the system will not run entirely on the device, but instead will mix local and cloud-based processes depending on the complexity of the task.
