Facebook plans to shut down its News tab in the US and Australia

Meta is trying to distance itself from regulations and payment complexities related to news media as it plans to remove the News tab on Facebook in the US and Australia. The company said today that it will discontinue this product in April 2024.

Last year, Meta shut down Facebook News in the UK, Germany and France, saying it wanted to “allocate resources to our products and services that people value most.” The tone of the latest announcement is also similar.

The social media company said the number of people using Facebook News in Australia and the US has fallen by 80% last year.

“This is part of our ongoing effort to better align our investments to the products and services that people value most. “As a company, we need to focus our time and resources on the things people tell us they want to see more of on the platform, including short-form video,” it noted.

Last year, Meta said news made up less than 3% of the content people see on their feed. Presumably, users will not notice this depreciation. Over the past few years, publishers have also seen a decline in referral traffic from Facebook.

The closure of Facebook News is due to regulatory measures and Meta’s withdrawal from investing in new products. Laws passed in Australia and Canada resulted in authorities requiring platforms to pay online publishers for their content. The company started blocking news links for users in Canada in August last year.

Meta specified that today’s announcement does not affect the company’s existing deals with publishers until expiration. Additionally, people in Australia and the US will be able to share news on their feeds and publishers will be able to manage their Pages and post links there.

The company stressed that it is not planning to invest in new news-related products.

“Additionally, to ensure we continue to invest in products and services that drive user engagement, we will not enter into new commercial deals for traditional news content in these countries and will not be able to negotiate new commercial deals exclusively for news publishers in the future.” Will not offer products.” It said.

Meta has consistently pulled out of allocating efforts towards news. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said last year that the company “will not promote news” on threads, the social network launched last year.
